Materials for the Citizen Archivist Project Pilot Cluster

Understand what the electronics will be used for as part of the Citizen Archivist Project

Participants in the Citizen Archivist Project will use the electronics collected below to document the events of their daily lives and their communities. As an example, participants might videotape a local festival, photograph their walk to school, or interview a grandparent in their native tribal dialect. Smallbean is preserving the media collected by the Citizen Archivist Project by partnering with a major academic institution in the United States to create an Internet accessible digital archive. Additionally, the electronic items collected below and the solar power system used during the Citizen Archivist Project will form the foundation of permanent computer installations at the Kwala Secondary School.

Understand Kwala

Kwala is located in the Kibaha-Pwani Coastal Region of Tanzania, approximately 30 miles west of Dar es Salaam. It takes about two hours to travel to Kwala from the center of Dar es Salaam. Kwala is comprised largely of subsistence farmers and some businesses such as small convenience shops, butcheries, and restaurants. Noteworthy locations in Kwala include: a small hospital, Kwala Secondary School, Kwala Primary School, a water tower, and a new phone tower for its more than 5,000 residents. Electricity came to parts of the village when it was extended to the local chicken farm. Most residents live on an average income of one dollar per day.

Smallbean will operate the CAP pilot at the Kwala Secondary School in conjunction with our on-site partner organization, the Newton Tanzania Collaborative.
